Home textiles achieves substantial export growth

The soaring raw material prices in the domestic as well as international markets has enabled producers of home textiles in Bangladesh to achieve a substantial 96 percent growth in exports during fiscal 2010-11 that ended on June 30.

In anticipation of a positive global economic scenario, the country targets to make one billion dollars in home textile item exports during current 2011-12 fiscal.

Over the last five years, a continuous rise has been noted in the earnings from home textile exports, considering which the country aims to achieve one billion dollars in exports during the current fiscal.

As the western economies started recovering from the effects of the global economic crunch, the demand for home textiles from Bangladesh rose significantly during the last fiscal, which pushed the sector's exports to US$ 788.76 million, as against previous 2009-10 fiscal's exports worth US$ 402.49 million.

Last year's home textile exports even superseded the US$ 563.5 million target that was fixed for the period.

The past five year's record show that the sector made US$ 788.76 million in 2010-11, US$ 402.49 million in 2009-10, US$ 313.51 million in 2008-09, US$ 290.35 million in 2007-08 and US$ 256.97 million in 2006-07.

For the current year, the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has fixed a target of earning US$ 985.95 million from exports of home textiles.

According to experts, demand for Bangladeshi home textiles soared mainly because of less production in two of the leading international home textile supplying nations – China and Pakistan.

Bangladesh's main home textiles shipments include bed covers, cushion covers, bed sheets, quilt, pillow covers, rugs, kitchen aprons, curtains, napkins, table clothes and gloves. The USA, the UK, European nations, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Dubai and Australia are its main export destinations.
