Bengal can emerge as next big textile hub: Indian minister
West Bengal can emerge as a major textile hub and the Indian textiles ministry is ready to provide assistance to boost the sector in the state, textiles minister Smriti Irani said recently. She was speaking at a session on ‘Recent Developments in the Textile Industry & The Road Ahead’ organized by the Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in Kolkata.

India will become self-sufficient in silk production in near future and the ministry had also taken initiatives in rejuvenating the jute sector with special focus on the North East, an official release quoted Irani as saying.

Urging the jute industry to bolster the government’s initiative in providing certified jute seeds to the farmers to produce better quality crop, she said India has the potential to become one of the largest jute exporters in the diversified section if the quality of the raw material can be improved.
