British MPs reject PM's Brexit deal in March 12 vote

Prime Minister Theresa May’s deal for withdrawing from the European Union (EU) was rejected by a margin of 149 in the House of Commons on March 12. British MPs will vote today on whether to rule out a no-deal Brexit. MPs will submit proposed amendments to the deal today. Opposition Labour Party has continued to stop short of calling for a second referendum.
After Attorney General Geoffrey Cox said despite legally binding changes to the EU withdrawal deal, the legal risk of the United Kingdom being locked in an indefinite backstop with the EU remained ‘unchanged’, MPs rejected pleas from May that ‘Brexit could be lost’, if the deal is defeated.
“This is an issue of grave importance for the future of our country. Just like the referendum there are strongly held and equally legitimate views on both sides,” British media reports quoted her as saying.
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a general election, and for his party to be given the opportunity to take over negotiations with the EU.
Expressing regret, European Commission President Donald Tusk said EU had done everything possible to reach an agreement and now the solution rests with London.
The influential European Research Group of MPs and the Democratic Unionist Party made clear they would not support her deal.
If MPs opt to rule out a no-deal Brexit on Wednesday, a third vote will take place on Thursday at which they will be able to push for a delay to the United Kingdom’s exit from EU. (DS)
