British Wool allows farm-to-shop tracing of wool in new scheme

As traceability and provenance of products are turning increasingly important to an ever more socially- and environmentally-conscious consumer, to meet this growing demand, British Wool, earlier called British Wool Marketing Board, is launching a new cent per cent traceable wool scheme that traces the origin of the wool from the farm gate to the shop floor.
Bradford-based British Wool is owned by nearly 35,000 sheep farmers in the United Kingdom. It collects, grades, sells and promotes British Wool to the international wool textile industry for use in flooring, furnishings and apparel.
According to British Wool marketing director Graham Clark, the body is keen to meet this ever increasing demand from consumers to understand the origin of products. The new scheme allows consumers to fully understand where the wool in their products is from. It also gives them peace of mind that the producer has received a premium payment for its wool, he said in a press release.
The scheme will initially include wool from three of British Wool’s largest depots: Bradford, Newtown and South Molton, which jointly handle nearly 50 per cent of the wool handled by British Wool.
“Although this is the first year for the scheme we anticipate that over ½ million kgs of traceable wool, from a wide range of types, will be sold through our auctions. Those producers whose wool has been selected to be part of the scheme this year will receive a premium for their 2021 wool,” Clark continues.
The new scheme is designed not only to give full transparency to consumers but to also maximise the price the producer receives for their wool.
British Wool is initially launching the scheme in the sleep product category working with two leading brands: Devon Duvets, which supplies 100 per cent British wool bedding, and Harrison Spinks, the premium mattress manufacturer that uses wool for its luxury natural mattresses.
