The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has said that the country's cotton output is estimated to be 353 lakh bales for the 2015-16 season which began on October 1.

It is down almost 30 lakh bales from the total output for the 2014-15 crop year which stood at 382.75 lakh bales, the CAI said.

The fall in output is largely due to whitefly pest attack in Punjab and Haryana. Cotton output in the northern zone during the 2015-16 season is estimated at 42.25 lakh bales, down from 53.50 lakh bales last year, it said.

According to the CAI's projections, India's estimated cotton supply for 2015-16 season is 440.6 lakh bales with an estimated domestic consumption of 315 lakh bales which leaves a surplus of 125.60 lakh bales. (SH)
