The Cotton Association of India (CAI) has said that the country's cotton output is estimated to be 353 lakh bales for the 2015-16 season which began on October 1.

The fall in output is largely due to whitefly pest attack in Punjab and Haryana. Cotton output in the northern zone during the 2015-16 season is estimated at 42.25 lakh bales, down from 53.50 lakh bales last year, it said.
According to the CAI's projections, India's estimated cotton supply for 2015-16 season is 440.6 lakh bales with an estimated domestic consumption of 315 lakh bales which leaves a surplus of 125.60 lakh bales. (SH)
