The exports of textiles and apparel from China dropped marginally during the first four month of this year.

In January-April 2016, China's textiles and garment exports totaled $77.5 billion, registering a decline of 0.03 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the data released by the General Administration of Customs.

Category-wise, textile exports earned $33.12 billion, down 0.01 per cent, while garment exports fell 0.04 per cent to $44.38 billion.

In the month of April 2016, textiles and clothing exports earned $20.86 billion, showing an increase of 23.78 per cent month-on-month and 4.95 per cent year-on-year. Of this, exports of textiles, including yarn, fabric and made-up goods, fetched $9.66 billion, up 2.95 per cent year-on-year, whereas apparel and accessories exports were valued at $11.19 billion, up 7.07 per cent year-on-year.

For five consecutive years up to 2014, Chinese textile and apparel exports had grown each year compared to the previous year. However, in 2015, China's textile and apparel exports fell 5 per cent year-on-year to $286.8 billion. Appreciation of yuan, sluggish economies of export destinations, increase in overseas investment by Chinese enterprises, and rising labour costs in China were the major factors that resulted in this drop.
