Cotton exports from Egypt's Alexandria decline

Cotton exports made by members of Alexandria Cotton Exporters' Association (Alcotexa) till June 2, 2012, during the current season that began on September 2011, have declined compared to the previous season.

Alcotexa's cotton exports until June 2 this season stood at 75,271 tons, as against exports of 110,539 tons made during the corresponding period of previous season, showing a decline of nearly 32 percent year-on-year.

Value-wise, Alcotexa's cotton exports during the period under review were worth US$ 236.9 million, compared to exports worth US$ 455.1 million made during the same period in previous season, registering a dip of almost 48 percent year-on-year.

During the week ended June 2, 2012, Alcotexa sold 687 tons of cotton, which included 576 tons of Giza 86 grade cotton and 111 tons of Giza 88 cotton.

Known for its supreme quality, Egyptian cotton is used for the production of a wide range of value added products including bedding and pillow cases.
