EU eyes tariff deal with US by July 9 after Presidents talk

The EU is hopeful of a trade deal with the US by July 9—the day the pause on US reciprocal tariffs ends—after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Donald Trump had a 'good exchange' over phone, a Commission spokesperson said.

The European Union (EU) is still hopeful of a trade deal with the United States by July 9—the day the pause on US reciprocal tariffs ends—after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Donald Trump had a ‘good exchange’ over telephone, Commission spokesperson Stefan De Keersmaecker said yesterday.

Von der Leyen also held talks with the leaders of Germany, France and Italy during the weekend.

"We want to reach a deal with the US. We want to avoid tariffs," De Keersmaecker told reporters at a daily briefing. "We want to achieve win-win outcomes, not lose-lose outcomes."

Without a deal, US tariffs on most imports would rise from 10 per cent now to the rates set out by Trump on April 2. That would be 20 per cent in the EU's case.
