EU-US trade should be guided by 'respect', not 'threats': Sefcovic

After President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 50-per cent tariff on all goods from the EU, the bloc's trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said it is committed to securing a trade deal with the US based on 'mutual respect', not 'threats'.
"The EU's fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both," he said on X after a call with the US trade representative and commerce secretary.

Following US President Donald Trump’s threat yesterday to impose a 50-per cent tariff on all goods imported from the European Union (EU), the latter’s trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic said the bloc is committed to securing a trade deal with the United States based on ‘mutual respect’, not ‘threats’.

"The EU's fully engaged, committed to securing a deal that works for both," Sefcovic said on microblogging platform X after a call with US trade representative Jamieson Greer and commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.

"EU-US trade is unmatched & must be guided by mutual respect, not threats. We stand ready to defend our interests," he noted.

Trump yesterday expressed impatience with the pace of ongoing EU-US trade negotiations, saying he was determined to raise tariffs on June 1.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump said: "Our discussions with them (the EU) are going nowhere," adding that there would be no tariffs for products built or manufactured in the US.

The EU exported goods worth over $600 billion last year from the United States and imported goods worth $370 billion, according to US government figures.
