Eurofins, which provides quality control services to the textile, leather and footwear industry, will participate in the Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry’s (ASBCI’s) 2019 Spring Conference next month. With the theme ‘Time for change - Facing up to fashion's sustainability and ethical challenges’, the event will take place on May 8.

The ASBCI’s latest conference will examine sustainability and ethics in the fashion supply chain with the aim of finding practical solutions to difficult problems. From carbon footprints to modern slavery, and from wasteful retail practices to landfill, the conference will address the big issues and ask: is it up to the industry to change the way consumers shop, or up to consumers to change the industry?

One of the confirmed speakers at the conference, Peter Hughes, sustainability lead at Eurofins | BLC Leather Technology, will touch on the emerging trend for vegan alternatives to leather. He will discuss the complexity of developing vegan products, including raw material choice, chemical processing, finishes, and end of life issues, and the importance of verifying all components.

Eurofins will also be exhibiting at the event to show the Softlines and Leather worldwide analytical services scope and its full range of sustainability services provided by its technical competence centres in the UK, Spain and its global network of production laboratories.

The Eurofins Softlines and Leather sustainability scope includes a range of expert services and tools covering the main topics of concern today.

Hughes leads the development of Eurofins | BLC Sustainability Services through expanding commercial opportunities, delivering specialist communication support to clients and implementing traceability systems for global supply chains. He is also involved with bespoke projects around circularity of leather and other materials, research into emerging material innovations for the sector and measuring the environmental impact of materials. He has over eleven years of experience working in the field of sustainable development with private, public and third sector clients.

The ASBCI’s 2019 Spring Conference will take place at the Renaissance Hotel in Manchester City Centre, UK. (RKS)
