Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed recently urged Japanese businessmen to explore newer areas for investment in export-oriented sectors of Bangladesh to unlock the country’s full potential. She was addressing chief executive officers at the Bangladesh-Japan Business Forum in Tokyo. Japan received $1.4 billion in investment from Japan Tobacco last year.

Bangladesh would like to see diversification of its export basket as Bangladesh is now also attracting global players in pharmaceuticals, shipbuilding and software, she said.

With environmental concerns growing globally, bio-degradable jute and substitute jute products from Bangladesh offer huge potential, a news agency quoted the prime minister as saying.

Bangladesh is establishing 100 special economic zones, including one exclusively for Japanese investors at Araihazar, she added. (DS)
