Fibre2Fashion's webinar on sustainable textile finishing innovation

The webinar titled "Protect people and the planet with durable water repellent finishing for more sustainable textiles”, is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at 8.00 a.m. Eastern Time (US & Canada). Participants are required to register online.

The webinar will be conducted by Shawn K Mealey, a senior technical service and development scientist at Dow. Mealey has a long experience in the application of silicon-based technologies to improve the properties and processing of plastics, composites, adhesives, coatings and textiles. He has 11 granted patents covering the composition and use of silicon-based materials.

During the webinar, Mealey will explain how Dowsil IE-8749 Emulsion, Dow's recent innovation, enables excellent durability and resistance to wash cycles; more sustainable water repellent solution, without fluorocarbons; and greater control over the hand feel of the fabric, from very soft to firm.

Unlike many conventional finishes, durable water repellents like Dowsil IE-8749 Emulsion do not need to be regularly heat treated to restore the water repellency performance, which is a key advantage for the durability of the final product.

Dowsil IE-8749 Emulsion is a new generation of silicone based durable water repellent finishes which does not contain fluoroalkyl or fluorocarbon. In studies conducted on a variety of textiles and colours, treatments based on Dowsil IE-8749 Emulsion demonstrated improved fabric retention compared to standard silicone finishes, thereby providing continued water repellency after multiple washes.
