France’s National Assembly recently adopted a bill aimed at preventing the production, import or sale from January 2026 of any product for which an alternative to per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) already exists after the Senate gave it a green light last year.

These include cosmetics, ski wax and textile items.

The ban will extend in 2030 to all textile products, with the exception of products whose use appears essential for the exercise of national sovereignty and for which there is no alternative and certain technical textiles for industrial use.

PFAS are human-made chemicals used since the late 1940s to mass produce several items. These take an extremely long time to break down, earning them the nickname ‘forever chemicals’.

Chronic exposure to even low levels of these chemicals has been linked to liver damage, high cholesterol, reduced immune responses, low birthweights and several kinds of cancer.

The Union of Textile Industries in France consulted by the Senators during the examination of the text had supported these provisions, ensuring that the textile fibre sector which supplies the clothing industry and more generally textile products and represents more than 2,200 companies in France, could guarantee the manufacture of textile materials without PFAS.

It reiterated to the rapporteur its support for these two ban measures, with the exceptions indicated, by 2026 and 2030.
