India, Egypt to set up cooperation in textiles sector

India will step up its collaboration with Egypt in the textile sector and talks are under way to raise export of textile machinery to the Arab nation, India's Ambassador to Egypt Sanjay Bhattacharyya told a press conference ahead of the Cairo Fashion and Tex Exhibition that opened on 13 September. Thirty seven Indian firms are present at the four-day event.

The delegation of Indian firms is represented by members of the Synthetic and Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council (SRTEPC), an apex body of manufacturers and exporters of man-made fibre textiles, and the Federation of Indian Export Organization (FIEO), according to a news agency report. The exhibition will also host an 'India Pavilion'.

Srijib Roy, director of SRTEPC, said Indian companies will not compete with the local industry but will cooperate with their Egyptian counterparts.

Polyester viscose fabrics, polyester blended fabrics, synthetic filament fabrics, laces, viscose spun yarn, polyester spun yarn, texturised yarn and polyester staple fibre are some of the key man-made fibre items that are exported to Egypt include.

India exported around $240 million worth of textiles and clothing products to Egypt in 2016. Out of that, man-made fibre textiles were valued at $97 million, cotton at $131 million, apparel at $2.32 million, jute at $4.4 million and carpets at $0.36 million. (DS)
