India not to allow any imports without HSN code: minister

India will not allow any imports without HSN code, according to commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal, who recently said that the government will support industry in every way to set up standards for Indian goods and services to meet international requirements so that brand India is recognised in the world as a provider of quality products and services.
He was speaking at the 6th National Standards Conclave in New Delhi.
Calling for zero tolerance for sub-standard products and services from the industry and consumers, he said the ‘Made in India’ mission should carry the commitment of people towards quality, sincerity, customer satisfaction and not be the second best.
The free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries has not led to the growth of India’s trade and business because poor quality products and services get restricted with non-tariff barriers when exported, the minister was quoted as saying in an official release.
The United States has 8,000 technical barriers to trade (TBTs), Brazil has 3,879, China has 2,872 and India has only 439 TBTs, he said. This illustrates the fact as to the manner in which India and the rest of the world are looking at the concept of quality in products and services, he said.
Goyal said the new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Act is taking a fresh look at all standards for goods and services to balance the interest of consumers with that of the industry that will enable the culture of quality to take root in the country.
The 6th National Standards Conclave was organised on 15-16 January by the department of commerce under the ministry of commerce and industry, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the Export Inspection Council of India (EIC), the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) and the Centre for Research on International Trade.
