India's silk export earnings fall 23% in 2015-16

India's earnings from export of silk and silk goods fell by 23.27 per cent in financial year 2015-16 ending March 31, 2016, according to the provisional figures released by the Central Silk Board (CSB), which functions under ministry of textiles, Government of India.

During the April-March 2015-16, India's silk and silk goods export earnings stood at $344.60 million, as against $449.14 million earned in exports during the corresponding period in 2014-15, according to the CSB data, prepared on the basis of statistics from the FTSI, DGCI&S, Kolkata.

Category-wise, readymade silk garments accounted for nearly 70 per cent of all silk and silk goods exports during the fiscal, and fetched $244.39 million in revenue. Silk fabrics and made-ups contributed $82.37 million, while silk carpets earned another $2.57 million.

Raw silk and silk yarn exports contributed $0.22 million and $1.34 million, respectively last fiscal.

The value of India's silk and silk goods imports, too, fell during the 12-month period to $210.79 million, compared to $220.83 million spent in 2014-15, the data showed.

Raw silk alone accounted for $153.68 million or 72.9 per cent of the total import value, whereas spending on silk fabrics and made-ups imports was $32.65 million. (RKS)
