India’s Uttar Pradesh state is gearing up to host a mega ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) Summit on August 10, to be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind, to boost traditional industries under its ambitious ODOP scheme. The event is likely to offer a major push to micro, small and medium industries (MSMEs) that form the state’s industrial backbone.

The government is working on a multi-pronged strategy to promote ODOP and encourage entrepreneurs come on board and benefit from the concept.
In first phase, the state will launch 1,000 ODOP retail outlets at strategic places such as railway stations, while entrepreneurs would receive financial support. ODOP clusters are being planned at Ambedkar Nagar, Etawah, Gautam Budh Nagar, Hapur, Barabanki, Agra, Kanpur City, Kanpur Dehat, Hamirpur and Fatehpur.
Amazon had already agreed to showcase traditional products representing 6 different districts.
Varanasi’s Banarasi silk sari iindustry, Bhadohi’s carpet units, Lucknow’s chikankari units, Kanpur’s and Agra’s leather goods sector and Gautam Buddh Nagar’s readymade garments factories are going to benefit from the scheme.
UP is home to nearly five million MSMEs and the sector forms a vital cog in the state’s economic development roadmap, including jobs. (DS)
