  • In January 2025, India's annual WPI inflation rate slightly decreased to 2.31 per cent, compared to 2.39 per cent the previous month.
  • The WPI fell by 0.45 per cent month-over-month from December 2024.
  • Notable price increases in the manufacture of food products and textiles contributed to the positive inflation rate, despite declines in primary articles and a small rise in fuel and power prices.
The annual rate of inflation based on all India wholesale price index (WPI) number is 2.31 per cent (provisional) for the month of January 2025 (over January 2024), a slight drop over 2.39 per cent registered in the previous month, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The month-over-month change in WPI for the month of January 2025 stood at -0.45 per cent as compared to December 2024.

“Positive rate of inflation in January 2025 is primarily due to increase in prices of manufacture of food products, food articles, other manufacturing, non-food articles and manufacture of textiles etc,” the Office of the Economic Adviser, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said.

The official WPI for all commodities (Base: 2011-12 = 100) for January decreased slightly to 154.7 from 155.4 in the previous month.

The index for manufactured products (weight 64.23 per cent) increased by 0.14 per cent to 143.2 in January 2025 from 143.0 for the month of December 2024. The index for ‘Manufacture of Textiles’ sub-group remained stable at 136.9 in January, while the index for ‘Manufacture of Wearing Apparel’ decreased very slightly to 154.1 from 154.4 in December.

The index for primary articles (weight 22.62 per cent) decreased by 2.01 per cent to 189.9 in January from 193.8 in December, while that for fuel and power (weight 13.15 per cent) increased by 0.47 per cent to 150.6 in January from 149.9 in December.
