Indian Railways flag off special train with cotton yarn to Bangladesh

The Ambala railway division of Northern Railway, in collaboration with the MGH Group, for the first time loaded a special parcel train at the Ambala Cantonment railway station with cotton yarn on June 27. The train, consisting of 20 parcel vans, was destined for Benapole in Bangladesh. Movement by train reduces costs incurred in sending yarn in small quantities to Bangladesh via road route.

The parcel train was flagged off by Vivek Sharma, senior divisional commercial manager, freight.

But for moving the consignment by a goods train, it was mandatory for farmers and merchants to mobilise the quantity in bulk, Sharma was quoted as saying by media reports from Punjab.

To resolve this problem and to facilitate movement of small consignments of up to 500 tonnes in each trip, the railway division took the initiative and scheduled a special parcel train to Bangladesh.

Each van in the train was loaded with 430 cartons, weighing around 23 tonnes. The total weight carried was around 468 tonnes and the cost per tonne came out to be ₹5,491.
