KVIC raises khadi handkerchief stitchers' wages in Nagrota

While launching sale of khadi handkerchiefs stitched by militancy-affected women of Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir last month, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) chairman VK Saxena approved the enhancement of wages from ₹2 to ₹3 per piece with effect from January 1. KVIC has sold 30,000 such handkerchiefs since the launch on December 17.
Each woman artisan at Nagrota used to earn around ₹170-200 stitching 85-90 such handkerchiefs on an average working four hours a day. Now with the revised wages, she will earn around ₹250-300 a day, increasing income by around half, according to an official release.
With 130 women artisans, the Nagrota stitching centre has a daily production capacity of 10,000 khadi handkerchiefs.
To increase the availability of these handkerchiefs, PayTM has agreed to sell 2 crore pieces of these items with the help of its online platforms.
The target is to sell 5 crore pieces by 2020, Saxena added.
