Merger of SVPISTM in Coimbatore with CUTN sought

PR Natarajan, Indian parliament lower house member representing Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore constituency, recently requested textiles minister Smriti Irani to take steps to merge city-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPISTM) with the Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN) in Thiruvarur and continue textile education programmes.
The institute under the ministry of textiles had signed an agreement with the university and offered Bachelor of science degree in textiles, a two-year full time post graduate diploma in management (PGDM) and a master of business administration (MBA) for various streams connected with the textile industry from 2016-2017.
On the promises offered by the administration that the Institute would be merged with the university, students appeared for the entrance examinations conducted by the CUTN and secured admission in the institute. They were hopeful of reduction in fees and that the degree certificate would be of merit to help get employment, Natarajan said.
However, as the proposed merger did not happen, aggrieved students have been boycotting classes for two weeks as a mark of protest, he informed.
The management had now reportedly sent letters to their parents informing that the merger between CUTN and SVPISTM stands cancelled.
It was also learnt that the Institute was to be converted into an advanced textile research centre. This would affect the education of the existing students and the future of the faculty, according to a report in a top South Indian newspaper.
Closing of the only college that offered textile related courses in Tamil Nadu has no rationale, the Natarajan added.
