Mexican company Desserto wins PETA Compassionate Company Award

Adriano Di Marti, the Mexican company behind Desserto, the alternative material to animal leather made from cactus, has won the Compassionate Company Award for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA. With this, Desserto already has six international awards. Desserto is a vegan cactus leather for fashion, automotive, aeronautics, footwear, and furniture.
The founders of Desserto, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cazares, received the news from Ingrid Newkirk, president of this international organisation, on behalf of its 6.5 million members and supporters around the world, Desserto said.
“The award is given for the development of Desserto, the sustainable material made from cacti. Innovative PETA approved vegan leather is bringing the fashion industry closer to the important goal of ending cruelty to animals while protecting the environment,” Newkirk said in a press release.
“This award coincides with the launch of the fashion giant H&M, which will present Desserto in a new sustainability collection this March 18 and aims to highlight the materials of the future, a step forward to meet the growing demand for ethics and animals. Pioneers like Adriano Di Marti show how much the fashion world has grown, literally. The PETA Compassionate Business Award honours Desserto for challenging the misconception that cows are commodities,” PETA executive vice president, Tracy Reiman said in a statement.
A PETA video exposé of the world’s largest leather producer revealed that gentle cows and bulls were branded on the face, electroshocked, and beaten before being killed for their skin. Turning animal skins into leather requires the use of 130 different chemicals, including cyanide, and leather production produces massive amounts of the carbon emissions that contribute to climate change. The World Bank has also reported that cattle ranching is responsible for over 80 per cent of deforestation in the Amazon since 1970.
