A new land-sea cargo route has begun functioning this year between Xi'an, the capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi province, and Mannheim in southwest Germany. The entire route is of around 12,800 km, and it will take 16 to 18 days for the cargo to be delivered from Xi’an to Mannheim through the new route, according to the Chinese government.

In the new route, containers from Xi’an reach Saint Petersburg in Russia by train, from where they are delivered to the port of Mukran in Germany by sea, and are again reloaded onto a train for the final destination of Mannheim.

The advantage with the new route is that it avoids the traditional China-Europe route where there is overcrowding at several busy stations in the east European countries, Chinese media reports said quoting Yuan Xiaojun, general manager of the Xi’an free trade port construction and operation company.
