Korean embroidery work on display in Jakarta

Several embroidery collections prepared by 23 artists from South Korea are on display at an exhibition going on at Central Jakarta's National Museum, as a part of the 2011 Korean Cultural Week.

Visitors at the exposition organized by the Committee of Korean Embroidery Council get the privilege of having a look at fine details of conventional royal court dressing, endearing accessories, ornamental pouches and Korean-style pillows and tapestries.

The exhibition provides the visitors with an opportunity to upgrade their knowledge about and cherish the exquisiteness of Korean embroidery work.

The main attraction at the expo is the beautiful embroidery on the Hwalot, the bridal gown of the Princess Bokon.

Also on display is flower embroidery called “A Paeony Blossom”, prepared using an embroidery technique known as tusuk satin or shading. It is presented in three colour gradations of pink flowers and green leaves which make the artwork look alive.

The tusuk satin embroidery technique is also extensively used by artisans in countries like EU and Japan.

Korea has a long embroidery history which provides it a strong base for artwork and facilitates production of affluent and first rate works.

Indonesia, on the other hand, mainly inherited the embroidery art from the Dutch during the colonial period and its art form has even been further influenced by other foreigners visiting the country.
