EFTA & Thailand expects negotiation on a comprehensive FTA

in a meeting this week, thailand and the efta countries (iceland, liechtenstein, norway and switzerland) prepared for upcoming negotiations on a comprehensive free trade agreement (fta) that is expected to be concluded in 2006.
total trade in goods between the parties totalled around 1.5 bill usd in 2004. an fta is expected to be highly beneficial to both sides as they have complementary trade interests. thai officials have expressed the hope that an fta will result in a 15 percent boost per year in bilateral trade.
negotiations will include the elimination of tariffs on industrial goods including fish, the opening up of markets for agricultural goods and will cover the services sector, investment, public procurement and intellectual property rights as well.
the first two rounds of negotiations will take place in thailand in mid-september and in geneva in november respectively.
