The Gupta family, a traditional Marwari family originally hails from Bhiwani in Haryana. Today, the Gupta Group has investments across the whole polyester and nylon value chain beginning from manufacturing of polyester chips to processing of fabrics and even a saree and dress material brand – 'Gupta', except for weaving of fabrics.

Gupta Synthetics Limited (GSL), a listed and also the flagship company of the group is engaged in production of nylon, polyester & polypropylene POY, FDY, draw texturised, drawn twisted and dope dyed yarn, all under one roof and having production capacity of 60,000 tons per annum.

GSL Nova located near Ahmedabad is a fully integrated manufacturing facility from polyester chips to POY & FDY yarn. Gupta Tex Prints Pvt Ltd is the fabric-processing division and has grown ten-fold since it began operations in 1979 with a capacity of over 40 million metres per annum. The company is also well-known for its 'Gupta' brand of sarees & dress materials.

Gupta Dyeing and Printing Mills Pvt Ltd (GDPMPL) is engaged in production of POY yarn in a wide range from 3,000-30,000 deniers, used in manufacturing of polyester shaggy carpets. Most of this yarn is earmarked for exports to various countries.

The various plants owned by the Gupta's, which adjoin each other in the Pandesara industrial zone in Surat are fed electricity from a captive power plant. Jatin is of the opinion that continuous electricity is a key requirement for the polyester industry, hence the investment in the captive power plant, which is also cost-effective.

Upgrading machinery and equipment is an ongoing process at the group. Jatin shares, “If you want to focus on quality and stay competitive in the global markets, it is very important to constantly upgrade machinery. We upgrade our machineries as and when a new and superior technology is introduced in the market. It also helps in facing the challenges of shortage of labour”.

To overcome the shortage of skilled workforce, the Gupta group trains and promotes those from the workers. According to Jatin, they are able to attract the right talent in the group. He is also impressed by the knowledge of the current crop of students graduating from the textile engineering colleges.

He is also excited by the fact that textile industry professionals from countries like South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and other countries are scouring for job opportunities in India. This he expects, will bring a fresh perspective and introduce their systematic way of working and style of management into the Indian textile industry.

Jatin is also keen to bring professionals on board their group companies, by hiring able administrators. This he feels, will free the family members from the daily mundane details and help them to concentrate on expansion activities or pursue other business interests.

When asked as to why the current generation of textile leaders families preferred to study in UK or US, he said, “When you study in foreign universities, you are on your own and learn to be independent. Secondly, we come across people from multi-cultural diversities, which enhances our outlook. Thirdly, the education system over there discourages mugging, but at the same time encourages thinking”.
