Taiwan raises threshold for textile item imports

Taiwan will be implementing the raised technology threshold for textile products entering the country from January 1, 2012.

Under it, the mandatory inspection system will become applicable on apparels, innerwear, sweaters, home furnishing, hosiery, swimwear, towels and other products.

The regulations stipulate that all textile and garment products imported by Taiwan must meet CNS 15290 textile safety (General requirements) standards. In addition to physical scrutiny of the items, the mandatory tests will include component analysis and other chemical tests.

All the products need to have an ingredients label, a washing label and a label mentioning the place of origin.

Once a product passes the mandatory inspection, a commodity inspection identification number would be attached on the tag or on the packaging materials. Textile products without such inspection identification number would be prohibited to be sold by retailers.

The implementation of stringent mandatory inspection system by the Taiwan inspection department would make import inspections in Taiwan at par with those already being followed by European Union, the US and other countries. This will automatically raise the technology threshold of textile items imported by Taiwan.
