Italian firm keen on partnering Thai silk makers

A Rome-based home design and decoration company is considering to partner Thai silk makers to ensure supply of Thai silk for its home textile business.

For the purpose, a top official of the Italian company, CPR SRL, paid a visit to a number of villages in the northeast of Thailand that are engaged in the production of silk and home decoration items.

Thailand's Queen Sirikit Department of Sericulture said the official was satisfied with the quality of Thai silk and sought a regular supply of the same through investment with villagers.

Further, the firm proposes to send a delegation to Thailand during March 2012 to enhance product design and quality for its clients, mainly comprising of high-end markets like banks, hotels and public agencies.

However, the Thai sericulture department, which seeks to enhance the use of Thai silk in international apparel industry, proposes to enhance its capacity and production standards prior to inking any deal.

Thailand's silk apparel exports growing at a year-on-year rate of 4.8 percent reached US$ 6.19 million during January to October this year, while silk fabric exports increased by 6.5 percent to US$ 8.8 million.

However, silk items constitute a small segment compared to textile exports which growing at a year-on-year rate of 12 percent touched US$ 7.07 billion during the period.
