AP textile traders call for 'bandh' to protest VAT

The Andhra Pradesh Federation of Textile Associations (APFTA) has announced that about 100,000 wholesale, semi-retail and retail traders in the State would observe a total shutdown of their establishments from January 23 to 31.

The call for a State-wide 'bandh' has been given by APFTA to protest against the State government's failure to rollback the five percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on textiles.

APFTA said the imposition of five percent VAT has negatively affected the traders in the State as buyers from border districts are now procuring textile materials from the adjoining States of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Chhattisgarh, as VAT is not imposed on textiles in those States.

APFTA representatives said no other State in the country levies VAT on textiles.

They added that they have met the Chief Minster on few occasions and have also submitted memoranda to MPs, Ministers and MLAs, but have so far not received any positive response from them.

In addition to bandh, all district associations will observe relay hunger strikes during the week-long period.

APFTA members appealed to the State Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to keep the government order on VAT pending till the VAT and Goods and Service Tax (GST) is implemented uniformly across the country.
