SAM gold ranking recognizes Novozymes' sustainability work

The SAM gold ranking gives Novozymes widely-acclaimed third-party recognition of the professionalism with which the company approaches its sustainability goals.

Years ago, business perceived sustainability as a risk and necessary evil. Today, business has changed -- its view of sustainability has evolved from first as a cost-saver, then a market-shaper, and now as a source of new business opportunities that make more efficient use of energy, water, food and other limited resources.

In this environment, Novozymes is proud that its blend of business, sustainability and innovation has been recognized by the gold ranking in the SAM Sustainability Yearbook 2012 for the third time in three years.

This recognition places Novozymes among the world's top sustainability leaders.

How SAM works
Today, the investment group Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) published its 2012 Sustainability Yearbook. Only the top 15 percent out of 2,500 companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index are included in the SAM Sustainability Yearbook, and the best performers among these receive the SAM Gold ranking, which is what Novozymes has achieved for the third year in a row.

Today's gold ranking comes in addition to Novozymes achieving the rank of Sector Leader ten times.

Recognition by SAM benefits Novozymes
“Our business partners appreciate that we have our own house in order – and that sustainability performance is something that we are able and ready to share with them,” says Mads Bodenhoff, Novozymes Vice President of Finance.

An example of the benefits of such recognition is the chance for Novozymes to participate in ongoing discussions about climate change and corporate environmental disclosure and reporting practices that are building in momentum this year, notably in relation to the Rio+20 conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil in June.

Improving corporate citizenship
An area that Novozymes has worked to improve its score this year is Corporate Citizenship. SAM gave the company a low ranking last year because, although the company had a high number of activities, they lacked a clear framework and direction. A new Corporate Citizenship strategy, called Citizymes, provides a clear direction and priorities, with measurable KPIs, measures the costs and benefits to Novozymes and communities, and communicates in a transparent way externally about our corporate citizenship activities.

The focus of the activities themselves is not new -- to strengthen science literacy in the communities near Novozymes' sites. For example in Brazil, Novozymes employees have been training science teachers at secondary schools for several years and have even developed an updated science curriculum. Working with the municipal education department in Araucária, the program covered more than 2,000 learners including children and teachers at 12 schools in 2011. Novozymes intendsto further expand the program.

It's a good example of what it takes to be included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes: companies are required to integrate sustainability systematically into the business and strategy, as well as achieving excellence at operational levels.
