Japan's ethylene output declines in Jan

Japan's ethylene production declined by a sharp 15.4 percent year-on-year to 547,400 tons in January 2012, as per the latest data released by the Government.

The decrease in ethylene production, in spite of no plants being shut in December or January, indicates production curbs undertaken by manufacturers in view of weak margins.

However, on a month-on-month basis, January production grew by 4.4 percent over December 2011 output.

Ethylene is produced from naphtha and is used as a raw material in the textile industry, especially in the polyester value chain.

Japan's ethylene exports dropped to 172,900 tons in December 2011, showing a decline of 19.6 percent compared to exports of 197,600 tons in November last year.
