The land-locked country of Belarus, in Eastern Europe, will set up a linen holding company and bring 29 linen enterprises in the country under it.
The holding firm, to be headed by the Orsha Linen Mill, will be tasked with making all companies to operate at a profit, Vasily Pavlovsky, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Foodstuffs, has said.
The Minister informed that only three of the 45 flax processing units in Belarus have already installed new equipment for producing good quality linen.
He added that the installation of new equipment is going on in one more unit, but the remaining units are operating with old equipment and are not capable to produce linen of international quality standards.
During the last few years, Belarusian exports of linen to the EU and the US have reduced to half, the Minister noted.
Besides outdated equipment, he said, the problem also lies in sowing of old, less effective flax seeds and also improper storage of flax fibre.
He stressed on the need for efficient processing using modern equipment to produce linen of good quality.
