'Adapt to change' – Vikas advices young textile leaders

Business discussion is never a taboo at the Ladia family dinner table. Even his mother, though hailing from a family of doctors and who though, not involved in the business, pitches in, whenever she may agree or disagree on something.

SRSL was begun in 1980 as a joint venture between the Ladia's and the Rajasthan government to produce synthetic yarns. A chance encounter between Mr VK Ladia and the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan – Mr Bhaironsingh Shekhawat, led to setting up the plant and began operations with a modest 13,198 spindles.

In 1981, SRSL went public and the issue was oversubscribed. This was followed by a rights issue in 1987. With these funds, SRSL expanded capacity to about 25,000 spindles.

1992 was a landmark year for the Ladia's, when it set up one-of–the-first of its kind polypropylene filament plant in India in Jaipur, with the latest technology from Germany, now managed by his younger brother – Anubhav Ladia. The plant was the one of the first company in India, which signed up for the Export Promotion Capital Goods Scheme (EPCG), a bold step in those days.

In 1995, the Ladia family set up a third project – Shree Rajasthan Texchem, with a capacity of 18,500 spindles, again with the latest state-of-the-art technology of that period, a year prior to Vikas joining the company. They installed an automatic plant for blending various fibres to ensure uniformity of quality and which could produce consistent lots as large as 100 tons.

Vikas was involved right from the grassroots in setting up the new spinning plant, which laid the foundation for his mentoring in the textile business. Over a period of time, they increased capacity and today it has around 32,000 spindles. Alongside they also put up a captive thermal electricity generation plant in Dungarpur to become self-reliant in electricity.

In 2004, they set up their first cotton spinning plant – Rajasthan Polycot, with a capacity of 18,000 spindles and Vikas says the yarn produced in the plant is comparable with the finest produced in the country. Today, there are around 86,000 spindles in all the plants put together.

In 2007, Rajasthan Polycot, Rajasthan Texchem, the thermal power plant and the Jaipur PP unit were merged in to SRSL. SRSL has always enjoyed high credit ratings from the banks and financial institutions and enjoys default free status with its lenders.

Among the main bouquet of yarns offered by the company are polyester/viscose dyed blended yarns, 100% viscose yarn and cotton yarn. It mainly supplies to reputed producers of suitings and home textiles. The company on an average produces 65 tons of yarn per day. SRSL is engaged in several export markets including Germany, Italy, Belgium and Turkey.

Vikas is of the opinion that installing the latest technology machines helps in two ways. One, it instills confidence in the buyers and second due to its consistent and good quality, it helps fetch a premium in the market.
