A pilot project on mechanized weaving of muga silk has been established at the Export Promotion Industrial Park near Amingaon town in Kamrup district of the northeast Indian state of Assam.

Inaugurating the ambitious project, Governor JB Patnaik said the project would result in replacing the existing manual production of muga silk with mechanized production. He said this would increase output to desired levels at relatively low costs.

The Governor said the project brings a revolutionary change in technique and production of muga silk and hoped that Assam's muga silk would become more popular in India as well as globally.

The project is a joint initiative of North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) and Rural Technology Action Group-North East (RuTAG-NE), housed at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IIT-G).

The construction of allied machinery required for the project was explained by Professor Sachin Kakoti. He said the allied machinery would help in reducing overall cost of the project.
