In spite of several adversities like floods, unfavourable weather, pest attacks and diseases in Sindh and monsoon rains in Punjab, Pakistan has been able to achieve a rise in cotton production.

According to a fortnightly report released by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), reporting a rise of 25.39 percent, in all 14.67 million cotton bales reached ginneries by April 1 this year, including the 121,493 bales that reached ginneries during March 16 to April 1.

This is 3.06 million bales more than 11.60 million bales that reached ginneries by same time last year, the report stated.

As revealed by the PCGA Chairman Amanullah Qureshi, while textile mills purchased 13.04 million bales of the total 14.67 million bales, private exporters procured 1.06 million bales till April 1, 2012. Thus, leaving back unsold stock of 569,492 bales with the ginneries.

This means that even without Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) participating in the trading activity, 14.10 million bales have been traded till now, Mr. Qureshi said.

According to the report, till April 1, the ginners had pressed 1.46 million bales of the total bales received.

Of the cotton procured by commercial exporters, only 327,359 bales were procured from Sindh, while majority of the rest was procured from Punjab.
