Silk weavers of Sualkuchi village of Assam would get a chance to showcase their work and skills, as Sualkuchi Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT), Assam and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Kolkata are jointly organizing a fashion show based on the theme 'Fashion and Sualkuchi Silk'.

The show to be held on April 11 at Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts, Machkhowa, in Guwahati, would showcase the finest designs and textiles as well as the innovative ideas of Sualkuchi silk weavers that have resulted in giving a modern touch to the state's traditional silk products.

As stated by the organizers of the fashion show, Sualkuchi village, located in the Kamrup district of Assam, has made a mark in production of high-quality traditional handwoven silk textiles, across the globe.

Hence, considering the great growth potential of the state's silk industry, a necessity was felt to upgrade the skills of weavers and entrepreneurs, and the show is an effort aimed at the same, they added.

The show would provide an opportunity to the weavers as well as SIFT entrepreneurs to feature their collections, which would be a fusion of traditional as well as modern Indo-western apparels and menswear.

Sualkuchi, which is popularly known as the 'Manchester of the East', directly and indirectly, employs over 25,000 people in silk weaving and related activities throughout the year. This includes over 12,000 women weavers.

While mekhala chador, the traditional Assamese dress, comprises around 70 percent of Sualkuchi's overall silk output, silk sarees constitute 20 percent and the remaining 10 percent are miscellaneous fabrics.

The village also exports exclusive muga silk items like curtains, bed linen, quilt and table linen, with its annual export turnover reaching an estimated Rs. 120 million.

The demand for Sualkuchi silk grows during festive occasions like marriages, and spring happens to be the best time for the silk weavers of the region, as it marks the beginning of the marriage season.
