Peruvian textiles & garment export growth slowdowns

The growth rate of textiles and apparel exports from Peru has declined in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the corresponding period of last year, José Luis Silva Martinot, Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, has said.

The Minister said that though the final figures for the first quarter are not yet available, it is pretty clear that the rise in textile and garment exports would not be as good as 2011, when apparel exports grew by up to 70 percent year-on-year.

While textiles and clothing item exports to countries like the US shrank during January-March 2011 period, exports to Venezuela and other neighbouring countries have increased, the Minister said at an event held in connection with the Fashion Week that is to be held in Lima during April 23-28, 2012.

In the first two months of 2012, Peru exported textiles and garments worth US$ 250 million, according to Luis Torres Paz, Director of Export Promotion at Promperú.

Peru has set textile and clothing items export target at US$ 2.4 billion for 2012.
