The Central Wool Development Board (CWDB) and Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) are working in collaboration with the state government of Meghalaya to set up a wool bank in Shillong, which would be the first such wool bank in the north-eastern region of India.

Sharing his views, the state Deputy Chief Minister Bindo M Lanong, said Meghalaya and other states in the northeast region have immense potential with respect to wool production, and wool industries or banks need to be set up in various parts of the region.

Stating that the state has wide areas of tree-less grasslands, Mr. Lanong, who is also the Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, said the government plans to start sheep rearing on a large scale.

He said that at present majority of the cattle in the state are reared for meat, and it is high time that the sheep breeders shift their focus to catering to woollen garments industry.

He added that the state has an innate infrastructure for sheep rearing, and is thus considering setting up a wool industry, which would open up new employment and financial growth avenues.

According to ICC Advisor Nakib Ahmed, wool industry can flourish in the north-eastern region of India, as the region enjoys long winters, which is a favourable factor for wool industry.

India's growing wool industry is estimated to be about Rs. 50 billion, which provides employment to thousands of people.
