Job losses on the clothing, textile and leather sectors have shown a significant slowdown in 2011, a report tabled late last week at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers' Union (SACTWU) shows.

According to Statistics South Africa data; employment in the clothing, textile and leather sectors decreased by 1.4% in 2011.

This is significant, considering the massive job losses that the industry had experienced in previous years. For example, as recently as 2008, the industry lost almost 13 000 jobs. Importantly, each of the last three quarters has seen increased employment numbers.

Job losses in 2011 dropped significantly compared to 2010 and 2009: in 2011, the union database recorded 48% less job losses than in 2010 and 55% lower than in 2009.

The last two years has seen employment in the industry being more stable.

The turn-around is mainly due to more solid support from government, especially since 2009, and the union's Save Jobs Campaign.
