China's large-scale textile enterprises mainly based in Northern Jiangsu Province have significantly increased consumption of foreign cotton.
These enterprises, which mostly used Xinjiang cotton in previous years, have increased proportion of foreign cotton to 40 percent, while of Xinjiang cotton has declined to 35 percent, this year.
At the same time, proportion of non-cotton fiber consumption has increased to 15 percent.
A large textile enterprise in Henan Province seldom used foreign cotton in previous years, but this year its use share of foreign cotton has increased to over 90 percent.
Even small textile enterprises now prefer using foreign cotton from Australia and India in place of locally grown cotton.
This explains the huge volumes of cotton which the country has imported in recent months.
In the first three months of 2012, China imported a total of 1.5678 million tons of cotton, an increase of 715,900 tons or up 84.0 percent year on year.
