Industrial production in Spanish textile industry witnessed a sharp drop of 13.9 percent year-on-year in March, 2012. This is the biggest drop in Spain's textile sector production since the drop of 21.1 percent recorded in July 2009.

It is also the sixth consecutive drop for the country's textile sector which saw increases in production throughout 2010 and most part of 2011.

The 13.9 percent dip in textile sector production is more than the decline of 10.4 percent seen in Industrial Production Index (IPI), according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The slowdown in industrial production was also observed in apparel segment, where output fell by 11.5 percent year-on-year in March this year.

Spanish garment sector has been witnessing a declining trend since August 2010, but it registered a 0.4 percent rise in February this year, only to dip again in March.

The largest decline in production was observed in knitwear segment, where the output decreased by 29.9 percent year-on-year during the month under review.

Among other items that recorded a decline in production were textile fibres, which dropped by 16.5 percent year-on-year; fur articles by 12.7 percent y-o-y; textile finishing by 10.2 percent; fabric manufacturing by 9.9 percent; and other textiles by 15.1 percent.
