The energy crisis and tariff hikes have taken a toll on employment in the powerloom sector in Pakistan.
This was admitted by the Minister of Textiles – Makhdoom Shahabuddin in the Pakistani Senate on Tuesday.
He said that around 10,000 powerlooms were working partially because of various factors like, energy shortage, high power tariffs, shortage of capital, etc.
He believes that around 30,000 powerloom and ancillary workers have been rendered jobless, which has affected around 100,000 people indirectly employed in the powerloom and sizing sector.
According to estimates, around 40,000 powerlooms have shutdown in the last two years, due to various factors.
