Driven by growing demand from emerging markets like China, Middle-East and Latin America, India's handicraft exports for April 2012 rose by 11 percent year-on-year.

Handicraft exports grew from April 2011's US$ 204 million to US$ 227 million in April this year, the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) stated.

Demand for handicraft items from the traditional EU and the US markets continues to remain low, as these economies are enduring a phase of slow economic growth.

Over 60 percent of India's handicraft exports are normally destined towards the EU and the US.

Exports of shawls as artwares grew by 31 percent year-on-year and were among the handicraft items that registered good growth during the month.

EPCH has forecasted India's handicraft exports for 2012-12 to touch US$ 3.2 billion, up from 2011-12's US$ 2.75 billion.

Jaipur, Jodhpur, Moradabad, Narsapur and Saharanpur are the main handicraft centres in India that supply to international markets, and serve as a source of employment for over one million people.
