Cotton production situation in China does not look optimistic for the current year, according to a report entitled “Situation analysis of China's cotton market”, released by Gao Fang, Executive Vice President and Secretary General of China Cotton Association.

China's national cotton acreage has declined by 9.2 percent in April this year, according to the report released at the 2012 Development Summit Forum of China Cotton Industry.

China imported 3.75 million tons of cotton during the initial eight months of 2011, showing an increase of 92.6 percent year-on-year. For the full year, China is expected to have imported 4.5 million tons.

As of April 2012 of the current cotton production year, China imported 42.8 percent of its total cotton imports from India.

As a result, cotton inventory has largely increased in China, but cotton production is likely to reduce this year, according to Ms. Fang.

The demand for cotton is also likely to decrease owing to global impact. Hence, the cotton supply and demand situation will get balanced this year, the report states.
