Sudan cotton production may decline this season

The production of cotton in Sudan is likely to witness a fall during the current cotton season owing to a delay in sowing of the crop and other factors.

Last year, cotton production was highest in Halfa region, whereas the lowest productivity was observed in Jazeera and Rahad regions.

The Sudanese Government has fixed the price for Brakat cotton at 600 Sudanese pounds per quintal and for Akala cotton at 500 Sudanese pounds per quintal for the current season.

According to Cotton Council, there has been a delay in sowing of cotton this season as the Sudan Cotton Company faltered in contributing for agricultural preparations. This might lead to a decline in cotton production this season.

The Sudan Cotton Company plays a significant role in cotton cultivation as it meets all financial commitments of the growers and also funds machinery and tools required in growing the crop.

The private sector in Sudan prefers to grow other crops, as growing cotton is not only expensive but the return is also not guaranteed. In comparison to cotton, the cost of growing other crops, including their transportation and marketing costs, is less, according to analysts.
