Imports of textiles and apparel by three major importing countries – US, EU and Japan fell 6.55 percent year on year in the first three months of 2012.

This was revealed in a data released by the China Textile Industry Association. It also informs that, China's textile exports to emerging economies of Southeast Asian countries also continued to decline.

China's textile exports to ASEAN grew by 2.69 percent year on year in January to April, with the rate reducing by 59.66 percentage points from a year earlier.

36,700 big and major Chinese textile enterprises realized a total industrial output value of 1.677058 trillion Yuan in January-April, the growth rate fell 17.43 percentage points from a year ago.

The association has pointed out that to the slowdown in overseas orders can be safely attributed to the wide gap in domestic and imported cotton prices, rather than rise in cost of production.

The Association believes that Chinese textile and garment enterprises will still face a grim situation in exports, if the spread between domestic and global cotton prices does not shrink.
