Textile traders in northeast Indian state of Assam will observe a one day strike on July 10 to protest against the imposition of five percent value-added tax (VAT) on textiles by the state government.

The state’s textile trade would be severely hit as customers would go to nearby states for purchasing their textile items, if the government does not rollback the VAT, the Assam Textile Merchants Association (ATMA) said.

Around 250,000 people are dependent on the textile sector for their livelihood in Assam, according to ATMA.

ATMA representatives will meet Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and request him to withdraw the five percent VAT on textiles.

Several states like Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Uttarkhand, Rajasthan, Nagaland, Delhi and Goa had imposed VAT on textiles in the past, only to be withdrawn a few days or months later.
