Surakarta fashion event bans printed batik motifs

Textiles and apparels with printed batik motifs would not be allowed to be displayed at the Solo Batik Fashion IV event to be held in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia, from July 13-15.

The annual event, which was first held in 2009, aims at extending a platform to the designers of hand-made and stamped batik products, and hence the organizing committee has banned presence of any fabric or garment with printed motifs at the event, said Djongko Rahardjo, Chairman of the organizing committee.

He said only the batik products prepared using the right batik making technique would find entry at the event.

The decision was taken as a move to respect the cultural legacy, while acquainting the people that textile products bearing batik motifs or printed batik products are not the same as batik, said Mr. Djongko, who is also the Chairman of Surakarta Fashion Designers Association

He explained that batik is not just a motif, but a series of processes, which is known as batik making.

People now consider textiles with batik motifs as same as batik. This misconception needs to be corrected by educating them regarding the actual batik-making process, he said.

Alongside designers from surrounding regions, namely Ferry Setiawan and Rendy Hapsanto from Semarang, Sugeng Waskita and Ramadhani from Yogyakarta and Jaka Santosa from Klaten, designers from Surakarta – Agus Bridal, Djongko Rahardjo, Rory Wardhana, Bilqis and Owen Joe – would also showcase their designs at the event.
