The Bushehr province of Iran would soon become home to world’s largest methanol plant.

National Petrochemical Company (NPC), a subsidiary of the Iranian Petroleum Ministry, would soon set up a plant in Dayer Port with a daily production capacity of 7,000 tons of methanol, which has utility in the textile and other industries.

It is proposed to construct nine methanol units in the first and second phase of the project in Pars Special Economic Zone. Funds for the mega project would be provided by a consortium of domestic banks, the company said.

At present, 25 petrochemical products are produced in Iran. But, as a pipeline supplying natural gas feedstock to Kaveh Methanol Plant has been laid down in Dayer Port, and several new petrochemical parks and development projects have kicked off, Iran would soon be able to supply about 60 new petrochemical commodities to local and international markets.

NPC earlier said that in spite of the sanctions imposed by Western countries on Iranian energy sector, demand for Iran’s petrochemical products is increasing.

Established in 1964, NPC, which started as a small fertilizer plant, has grown to become the second largest producer and exporter of petrochemicals in the Middle East.
