PHMA opposes 15pc hike in industrial gas tariff

Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) has termed the recent 15 percent hike in industrial gas tariff as unjustified and opposed the same.

PHMA North Zone Chairman Usman Jawaad said Pakistan’s textile industry in general, and the value added knitwear garment industry in particular, is already enduring a crucial phase, where sustenance has become the key issue in the current competitive global market.

In spite of being significant contributors to the country’s export earnings, the textile and garment industry has registered a decline in exports during last fiscal, mainly because Pakistani exporters lack a level playing field.

Stating that the 15 percent hike in gas tariff would ultimately raise the production cost of the textile industry, Mr. Jawaad called for immediate roll back of the decision in the interest of the country’s export industry which is passing through its most critical phase.

Drawing attention to a situation where textile production is falling sharply, PHMA Chief said this has raised the redundancy threat for workers, which has increased the country’s poverty level. Given the situation, the Government is expected to initiate supportive measures rather than further pressuring the industry by hiking gas prices, he said.
